Color Project Habits of Mind

I felt that throughout this project I was able to develop my painting skills, mostly mixing paint and discovering the analogous color scheme, and being able to replicate this accurately in the paint shades I used.

Engage and Persist - I was interested in two ways during this project, firstly, being able to replicate a highly detailed and nuanced object, and second, working with the analogous color scheme in place of the grayscale. Both were challenges that I feel I was able to tackle, and both truly engaged me and allowed for me to comletely focus on these challenges.

Envision - At the beginning of this project, I imaged that my Santas would be pretty accurate to how they are now. Using the analogous color scheme posed some problems and made me rethink what i had in mind, making the darkness in the shadow the purple that would unite the red object and the blue background to create a compelling piece.

Express - I feel that my monochromatic piece conveys an idea of light conquering darkness, as shown by the santa, whose brightness draws the eye and is a sharp and pleasing contrast to the dark background. The analogous picture has a much darker feeling, and i think i must change this as it is almost overwhelming. In the future, lighter colors might be added, as it is a welcome contrast as shown in the monochromatic piece.

Observe - I feel that through this project, I was able to cultivate the skill of looking closely at an object through its shadows and different tones of light and dark, overall learning to represent an object more clear¥ by looking at small, individual parts.

Understand the Art World - I cannot think of an artist that I was influenced by.

1. Coming into this project, I had never used a camera except for the one on my phone. So obviously, through this project, I have learned a lot about how to use a camera. In addition, at the beginning of this project, I knew very little and was uncomfortable with photoshop. By the end, I felt competent and able to express my artistic thoughts through this medium. I used my skills of observation to see the nuance and details in the photo which led to better decisions in the final artwork.

2. The expressive quality of red allowed for me to use wavy shapes to evoke a feeling of fire. The rhythmic quality in my opinion of green allowed for me to mimic this in my design choice. The qualities of rhythm and, of course, complementary, analogous and monochromatic influences =d my color choice.

3. After this project, I feel like I can look at a color and think about the analogous, monochromatic, and complementary colors. In the projects to come I am sure I will draw upon this knowledge to make better color based choices.

These drawings fascinate me because I think in he first one of the chair, there are many interesting shapes that come together and really fit together to make the shape of a chair. Although the second painting has no enclosed spaces, they still fit together, and the shading on the edges reflects the idea that the negative space continues.

Look back at your sketchbook, your final wire sculpture and previous blog posts. What have you learned about line? 

I have learned that line can be used to express many things, including movement, stillness, form, and emotion. The amount of lines can express the form in different ways including the intensity of the object or the volume in a 3d sculpture. The more accurate lines you add, the more realistic and 3d the figure seems. The lines can also represent movement if the lines are used in the right manner. 

How have you improved with the wire and tools over the course of the project? can you think back to a specific moment when you needed to find a creative solution to a struggle you were having with the material? how did you solve that struggle?

Yes, I feel like I have most definitely improved with wire and tools though out the course of this project. In this project, at one point I was having trouble making the points of intersections between the wire. I solved this by making the intersections not only stabilize the structure, but also turn it into another line that could benefit the form. 

Looking at the "Habits of Mind" document on the homepage. Using that document, how have you developed your craft with this project? How have you "stretched and explored" with this project?

I feel like I challenged myself and developed my craft in this project. I explored different ways to express the figure, and learned and changed my habits when I learned new things. I felt like I also improved the process of developing my craft and learning to work with wire, as I have never done it before. I think that now that I can work with wire, I can now express my ideas in one more form and I have learned how to express my ideas through art even more clearly than I was able to before.

What feedback did you receive from your partner? 

My partners thought that my piece expressed movement well, and the wire was used well to represent the form. 

how have you attended to line in 3d space? In what ways could you refine your use of line to capture the gesture? Consider where your figure is expressing movement, where your figure expresses stillness. Where do you see stillness and movement? 

I have attended line in 3d space by bending it in all directions and trying to capture the essence and movement of the figure. I could refine my lines by simplifying the legs, as they can be confused with the torso. I think that my figure expresses stillness moreso then movement, and I think this stillness is captured by the simplicity of the wire. 

How do you intend to proceed / finish your work? What needs to be addressed?

I intend to stain the wood on which my figure is seated, and I think this will make my sculpture more regal and peaceful, and in addition, simplify the legs. 

Gesture drawings

To make a gesture drawing, first I draw the top of the head, and then draw down to the feet capturing the shoulders, torso, and hips in a single line. I then figure out the orientation of the hips and shoulders and then I fill in the details. I chose this drawing because I felt like I captured the form well and my lines really expressed the form.
